It was originally created to carry 5 champaign bottles at a time, but soon gained the popularity to be carried as an everyday handbag. Women everywhere were carrying around the damier canvas design and Louis Vuitton soon realized that he had a great hit with this new line of luggage. Right after this, Louis Vuitton began creating more and more handbags for everyday use.

Even today, companies still try to immitate and outsell the Lous Vuitton handbags, but to no avail. Louis Vuitton is still at the top of the handbag industry.
