The Great New York State Fair

Author: Gail Leino

It's been around for over one hundred and sixty years, giving reason for the 'Great' in the Great New York State Fair held from late August to early September in Syracuse, New York. Visitors can come and check out what makes New York, great.

You can see what farm life was like over a hundred years ago at the Agricultural Museum with demonstrations of Broom making, Flax weaving, Wood working and Soap Making daily.

The Carriage Museum offers over fifty horse drawn vehicles, so visitors can get an idea of what it was like getting around before the advent of the Gas engine. This museum also offers an Old West Cattle Drive Camp and a Chuck Wagon Exhibit for visitors to explore.

Milk is the official drink of New York State and at the fair's Dairy Building and Rainbow Milk Bar you can sample some of the stuff while learning all about milk. The milk at the Rainbow Milk Bar comes from cows that are milked daily at the Milking Parlor on site. The Parlor milks twice a day and is open to visitors.

Lovers of Potatoes should check out the Potato Booth where they can get a Baked New York State Tater. You can order it with any toppings you like, cheese, butter, salt, extra salt, and sour cream.

New York City is famous for its street corner entertainers and visitors to the fair can come to see it all. They travel the fair singing, dancing, and performing tricks of all kinds for you the visitors.

The Fair's organizers are especially proud of the fact that they've been arranging for sign language interpreters to join the fair staff for over seventeen years. The interpreters wear easy to spot blue shirts and can be seen interpreting for the public at over three hundred events. Large groups can also request that an interpreter join them to help out for the day.
